DANISH MUSHER WINS KNIK 200

 

Morten Fonesca of Denmark on Sunday captured the Knik 200, beating runner-up John Schandelmeier by nearly two hours in the sled dog race that is a qualifier for the Iditarod.

Fonesca finished the race from Knik Lake to Skwentna and back in 23 hours, 33 minutes, 41 seconds, to collect the first-place prize of $1,800. Schandelmeier, of Paxson, was second in 25:13:35 and earned $1,300. He edged Ray Redington, Jr., of Fairbanks, who finished less than seven minutes later for third place and $1,000.

The other money winners were fourth-place finisher Ryan Redington of Knik, who took home $800, and fifth-place finisher Dan Govoni of Houston, who collected $600.

Kusko field loaded

Three former race champions, including four-time winner Jeff King, are among 14 mushers who have signed up for the Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race in Southwestern Alaska on Jan. 21.

Joining King in the field for the out-and-back race that begins in Bethel, follows the Kuskokwim River to Aniak and returns to Bethel, are 1994 race champion Martin Buser and 1996 race champion Charlie Boulding.

The mushers will be competing for $100,000 in prize money. The winner will earn $20,000.

Through Monday, 14 mushers had signed up for the 21st annual race. Mushers can still sign up, with a $300 entry fee until Monday and a $600 entry fee after Monday. Races held in conjunction with the Kusko 300 are the Bogus Creek 150 and the 65-mile Aniak Dash.

Doug Swingley won last year's Kusko 300 and went on to win the Iditarod.

Grand Portage Passage

Six Alaskans, including defending champion Mitch Seavey of Seward, are entered in the second annual Grand Portage Passage Sled Dog Race, a 330-miler that starts Jan. 23 in Grand Portage, Minn.

Also entered is defending Iditarod champion Doug Swingley of Lincoln, Mont.

Besides Seavey, other Alaskans entered are Dean Osmar, Dan Seavey, Bill Cotter, Ryan Redington and Caleb Banse. Former Iditarod race marshall Mark Nordman of Grand Marais, Minn., also is entered.
